DC...where folks know how to appreciate graphic literature!

After a three-hour delay that got us in to BWI at 4am (with a gracious retrieval from the airport by our hosts at that hour), we got some rest, and proceeded to have a wonderful jaunt to DC. Sunday we spent catching up, then seeing Woody Allen's new flick, Midnight in Paris, as inspiration for Paul's work, and our lifestyle.

We took the Metro from where we were staying in Takoma Park to Farragut North, to grab some lunch, then walk around town. We had a nice walk to and through Georgetown, Paul drew from an ice cream cafe, then we walked up and over to the hip and trendy Adams Morgan (making us SF Missionites feel at home), where Paul did another drawing at the intersection of 18th St & Columbus. As we passed through Dupont Circle, we bumped into a few friends that we haven't seen in two years, and made plans to hangout following Paul's event the next day.

Tuesday G took us out to Glen Echo Park, where we wandered around, Paul considered drawing, and we had a picnic. We stopped at the charming Irish Inn for a beer and a few snacks, before getting home to prepare for the night's event.

Paul had a terrific turnout at the lovely Politics & Prose, and where interjected questions kept him talking for almost two hours. The crowd seemed to be soaking up every bit of info, though, so Paul kept giving them what they wanted.

After we went for gluten-free pizza and drinks with a handful of friends at the fun Comet Ping Pong. The friends were three distinct groups, who all mingled and laughed and enjoyed themselves. New friends all around in honor of Paul and his success. Wonderful!

After staying up late to pack, we sprung out of bed to have a farewell coffee & conversation with M in the kitchen, then breakfast and a ride to the train with G. Although we've ridden trains all over the world, it was our first Amtrak ride here in the states, and it certainly delivered. A quiet car! How civilized, and peaceful, and three hours later we emerged from Penn Station into the bustling and sweaty streets of NYC!

And you are listening to... Los Angeles!

Fabulous drive down to L.A. and back. A great turnout at Skylight Books on Friday night, a wonderful diversity of fans, plus a nice welcoming from friends. Tony Millionaire came by to say hi, as did Phil and the creative team from Bob's Burgers.

We stopped by Secret Headquarters on the way to the event, a cool comic shop in hip Silverlake. Unfortunately, Dave was not there to greet us, at least Paul got to sign the one copy they had of his book (they should definitely order more, the book is selling like hotcakes).

E & V and I met at the infamous Dresden before the event, a bar with rich history and thick
with atmosphere.

After P's great talk, we had oysters, moulles frittes, a bottle of wine and cocktails out on the sidewalk of Figaro Cafe in sweet Los Feliz, under a
perfectly warm heatlamp.

We checked out the Tim Burton show at LACMA. Interesting to see the arc of his career from age 17 until now, though I'm convinced he's more of an idea man with a distinct aesthetic, than an artist.

We had a lovely time in Lafayette Park, plus an overnight in Santa Monica with my dear R. She gave me a tarot reading of a lifetime: life purpose is nigh! The cycle of completion is afoot!

We listened to all but the last 30 minutes of Peter Carey's Theft: A Love Story on the drive along golden I-5.

Today we relived an old custom of stopping in Gorman for lunch at Los Pinos for great local Mexican food.
